The first thing that hits you is the map screen. It's that same Aravorn world from Loren, same font even, and my brain did that little nostalgia skip. Then Kunya shows up with her war paint and abs that could cut glass and I'm like, okay, Winter Wolves, I see you still know your audience.

Lyara's the half-elf beastmaster princess from the title, obviously, and her whole arc about not fitting in with the desert tribe hits different when you realize her beast taming powers are a metaphor for... actually no, sometimes a giant wolf companion is just a giant wolf companion. The lesbian content between her and Kunya is surprisingly tender for a game that also has a scene where someone gets railed against a cactus. Not a euphemism. There's an actual cactus.

The branching endings depend on who you romanced and whether you found all the hidden beastmaster shrines. I missed two shrines and got the "bittersweet" ending where the tribe survives but Lyara never fully awakens her power. Whatever. I was too busy trying to unlock Takara's third scene to care about ancient elven magic.
