The unpolished textures actually help here, giving skin a slightly rough, almost tangible quality, like you could feel the heat coming off the screen. It's a prison, so the power dynamics are the whole point. You're not here for a nuanced take on the carceral system. You're here for the scene where three guys corner you in the laundry room and the steam fogs up the screen. The game understands that the hottest part is the anticipation, the threat, the way a hand rests on your shoulder and squeezes just a little too hard. The sound design is basically nonexistent, just some looping ambient noise that sounds like a fridge humming, but honestly, you're not playing this with the volume up for the atmosphere. You're playing it for the moment the biggest guy in the yard calls you "pretty" and the only response option is a nervous gulp.
