About this game

The first thing that hits you is the maid uniform. It's not subtle. The fabric strains in ways that physics textbooks would call optimistic, and the game knows exactly what it's doing. RE:MAID doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is, a visual novel about your roommate who also happens to be your maid, and the tension is there from the first button strain. I clicked through the opening dialogue with half attention, the way you do when you're just trying to get to the good parts, but something weird happened around the third choice. I actually started reading.

The writing is surprisingly solid for something that could have coasted entirely on the art. LASTERK's scenes are the main event obviously, detailed and frequent enough that you never go long without a reward, but the branching paths kept me reloading saves more than I expected. There's a moment with a spilled drink that goes places I didn't anticipate, and the bitcoin cheat code someone mentioned on the forum unlocked a scene that made me close my browser real fast when I heard a noise outside my apartment. Not because it was bad. The opposite.

I wish the bunny outfit option had more dialogue variations instead of just the visual change. It's a small thing but once you notice the text doesn't shift much between outfits, it breaks the illusion a little. The maid route though, that one commits fully. There's a scene involving cleaning supplies that I'm not going to describe here but let's just say the word "polish" has been ruined for me permanently. My brain now associates it with things that have nothing to do with furniture.

The whole thing runs in browser which is convenient but also means I can't exactly alt-tab gracefully when someone walks in. The web version compression is noticeable on some of the more detailed CGs, though apparently the Patreon build fixes that. I kept thinking about that one choice where you can either help her reach a high shelf or just watch. I picked watch first because of course I did, but then the dialogue afterward made me feel like such a creep that I reloaded and picked help instead. The game judged me and it was right.
