About this game

The cutscenes in Hearts in the Shadows have this weird, almost unfinished quality that I can't stop thinking about. Not in a lazy way, more like someone deliberately left the edges rough. The 3DCG models don't quite sync with the dialogue sometimes, lips moving a beat too late or eyes that hold a stare just a second longer than comfortable. It creates this uncanny valley effect that actually works for a story about a psychology student who's basically a manipulative creep in training. Trevor, or whatever you rename him, watches people. And the janky animation makes you feel like you're watching too, like a voyeur peeking through a window that's slightly warped.

The school setting is full of these broken girls with their trauma laid out like a buffet. There's this one scene where you're just observing a classmate through a doorway, and the camera lingers on her fidgeting hands for way too long. The game doesn't tell you it's creepy. It just lets you sit there, controlling when to look away. The incest thread with the sister character, god, it's handled with this quiet dread that made my skin crawl. She shows up at your apartment unannounced, and the dialogue options range from protective to something else entirely. The sandbox structure means you can just... not engage. Or you can dive right into the manipulation mechanics, which are basically just choosing when to be nice and when to withhold affection. It's simple but effective in a gross way.

The RPG elements feel tacked on honestly. Stat checks for psychology knowledge that unlock darker dialogue paths. I spent way too long grinding those just to see how far the narrative would go. The voyeurism scenes are where the unpolished visuals actually shine, the low quality textures making everything feel seedy and wrong. Like finding a corrupted video file you shouldn't be watching. The game never quite commits to being full horror or full porn, and that indecision is somehow more disturbing than either would be alone. My save file corrupted once and I almost didn't care. Almost.
